Creating Nostalgia

I don’t know how many of us realize this but every day we create nostalgia. Most of the days the brain sweeps the nostalgia under the carpet, or worst into the recycle bin never to be retrieved back again. But some days are so special that the days' happening are safely tucked away into a cupboard or in an attic, just to be retrieved many years later as a nostalgic memory. It also has an uncanny habit of improving with time just like wine. We would go to this imaginary attic or open the cupboard and go through the stuff in it. Looking at this stuff, cleaning the gathered dust on it, going through it… that’s when nostalgia hits us.

Today I am creating nostalgia for future as I celebrate my 1st Birthday with my wife. At the same time I am rampaging through the nostalgia created every year.

The parties we used to have when we were kids.

Blowing the candle, cutting the cake, playing with the friends, giving return gifts, opening presents… and so much more. Then we grow up. Go to college and the birthday bumps gets added. (Painful but memorable in a good way.) And the smearing of cake on the face of birthday person, going out for treat… we grow a bit more. Now its official treats, decorating the office cubical that gets added to the attic of nostalgia. Time spent with your loved ones. Special gifts, hugs, kisses… and we keep adding to the nostalgia.

It doesn’t stop at birthdays only. Other special days help in making this heap bigger and bigger. Days like anniversary (may it be 1st kiss or proposal or marriage… the list goes on as per ones creativity), days like 26th Jan when we take part in republic day parade as kids in tabloid. Festive season like Holi (tearing each others cloths and painting everyone green/silver etc), Durgapuga (watching all the pandals and various forms imaginable of Durga ji), New-year (making resolutions and not keeping them, mid night party)… trips (going to trips from school, college, or with office friends), get-together (college re-union, school re-union)…

All we need is a bit of creativity so that we can have a excuse for the brain to pack some thing in the cupboard/attic.

These memories make me feel warm and cozy… and encourages me to make more such moments and put them in the attic where I would visit every now and then. Today I revisited my attic for such moments and will carefully add some more.

Cheers… !!!
